Nature
Costa Rica is home to a great number of volcanoes — there are six active volcanoes and another 61 inactive ones.
Costa Rica contains 5% of the world’s biodiversity. That means lots of cool birds, iguanas, monkeys but also lots of bugs.
Therefore Bug Spray is a must!
There are some dangerous animals in Costa Rica such as Crocodiles, snakes, poisonous frogs, jaguars, spiders. These are usually not found near populated areas, but perhaps watch your step if you venture into the rainforest.
Food
Eat a lots of fruits and vegetables – they’re some of the best tasting and healthiest in the world.
In Costa Rica, the tap water is drinkable in most larger towns.
The local liquor in Costa Rica is called “guaro” and is made from sugar cane. It is best enjoyed with slices of mandarin limes, a local citrus with a truly unique flavor.
You will eat lots of rice and beans called “Gallo Pinto” – basically the national dish of Costa Rica.
Getting around:
Use the Waze app. It is the best navigation app in Costa Rica.
Get ready for people ignoring traffic signals and motorcycles speeding by you on either side of your lane.
Distances may seem close but can take forever to drive due to narrow, bad roads and traffic.
Watch out for Tolls: There are tolls on the major highway in the country heading from San Jose to the Pacific coast. They do accept dollars though, so if you are heading from the airport to the beaches, don’t stress if you haven’t switched to colones yet. Otherwise most rental cars should offer an EZ-pass.

General
One thing to know about Costa Rica is that traveling here is not particularily cheap. In fact, it’s the most expensive country in Central America, though you can still find budget friendly stays!
You can pay with both USD and Colones throughout the country.
Costa Rica is located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. The country is a highly seismically active country. Minor temblors occur nearly every day but major earthquakes are quite rare. So don’t get scared if you feel one, most earthquakes in Costa Rica are minor.
Guanacaste
Guanacaste is located on Costa Rica’s northwest area and it is the most visited provice of Costa Rica. This is where the biggest and best hotels in Costa Rica are located has most developed tourism infrastructure.
Nicho and I will stay a week in Tamarindo, one of the most popular towns in the Guanacaste area. The Tamarindo Town offers a wide range of activities, nevertheless the whole Guanacaste province has unique places worth a visit.

Arenal - La Fortuna
La Fortuna is a small town in Costa Rica located in the rainforest northwest of San José. It is often referred to as “Arenal” because it is home to the famous Arenal Volcano.
Located in the Northern Highlands, La Fortuna is one of Costa Rica’s most popular destinations. This town is only 2.5 hours from both Liberia’s international airport and San Jose’s international airport and 3.5 hours from Tamarindo. La Fortuna has impressive views from almost any vantage point of the Arenal Volcano, a still-active volcano! This town offers many diverse options of attractions to enjoy while still offering a glimpse into local small-town life, resulting in the full Costa Rican experience!
Arenal Volcano has been Costa Rica’s most active volcano since 1968 until it entered a resting phase in 2010. Since then the volcano’s seismicity and lava flow have decreased significantly. Even without the regular volcanic activity that it’s known for, Arenal Volcano is still majestically beautiful. Clouds often obscure the view of the volcano but most visitors do get to see the volcano a few times during a visit.

Manuel Antonio National Park, is a small National Park in the Central Pacific Conservation area located on the south pacific coast of Costa Rica, just south of the city of Quepos, Puntarenas. This area is only 3.5 hours from San Jose’s international airport and 6 hours from Tamarindo or Liberia. This park has one of the most impressive landscapes of the world and has several coves with many white sand beaches and lush foliage amidst great mountains and forests that reach the beaches.
Caribbean Coast
The Caribbean coast has more rain and fewer “modern” conveniences, nevertheless is worth of seeing. This area is only 3 hours from San Jose’s international airport and 6 hours from Liberia and up to 8 hours from Tamarindo by car.
